Nebraska creating more gun free zones

Bad news on the safety front.

(5/24/2007) LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) A loophole in the state's concealed-gun law was closed by state lawmakers Thursday -- and then some. The Legislature amended a bill (LB97) to include colleges and universities on the list of places concealed handguns cannot be carried.

A law passed last year allowing people to carry concealed handguns includes a long list of places concealed guns cannot be taken, including schools. But Attorney General Jon Bruning said colleges and universities are not considered schools under the law.

Colleges and universities reacted by posting signs banning handguns. Those signs can soon come down because of Thursday's vote.

They may also come down in hospitals, which lawmakers added to the banned list today. Emergency rooms and trauma centers were already off-limits. . . . .

and
Sen. Russ Karpisek says he’s a gun-loving redneck.

And he gets a lot of business at his meat market from hunters.

“I’m not intending to anger the NRA,” the Wilber senator said, “but why on earth would you need a concealed weapon in a hospital?” . . . .

Thanks to Richard F. Griffiths and Allen Forkner.

What he meant was "Why would anyone need a huntin' rahfle in a hospital?"

These close minded hunter types are more damaging to conceal carry cause than most Brady types.

Ugh, I don't like this news, being a student in the Nebraska university system. We only just got the concealed-carry law in this state, I know the mayor of Omaha wanted the city to be exempt (brilliant move there) even though the last crime rate stats I saw were not pretty. (don't think he got his wish) It seems like somebody gets shot every night in north Omaha. My dad's afraid to go through my grandfather's old neighborhood because he doesn't know if he'll get shot.

As a student, this does not make me feel safer. Heck, I don't know if I can even carry a pocketknife on these universities.

Why would one need a concealed handgun in a hospital?

Did I lose my civil rights when I became an RN?

Nurses and doctors face dangers far more serious than those of accountants and lawyers. We work the entire clock. We arrive to work and leave from work in darkened parking lots. Nurses are predominantly female and are often targets for rape.

Why grant an accountant who works from 9 to 5 the right to carry and then deny it to the nurse who works 11 to 7?

Entering and leaving the hospital aren't the only times that medical personnel face danger. They deal with the whole of society, good, bad and worse. From the mentally deranged to the criminally insane. We face dangers that someone in meatpacking would never know.

To ban guns from hospitals puts up a great big sign "Go Here To Rob, Rape and Murder".

It was a similar sign to the one sitting on VA Tech when Cho the Coward went to murder.

We can still stop this.

Call Gov. Heineman;s office and politely ask him NOT TO SIGN LB97.

There are not enough days left in the session, it could be pocket vetoed.

Call him at 402-471-2244.

Do it NOW before he signs it.

There are talking points to be made at joemerchant24.blogspot.com
