Canada's new minister of public safety says the government has no plans to back off on its intention to scrap the controversial long gun registry.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper announced his plan to kill the registry during the election campaign, and Public Safety Minister Stockwell Day told CTV's Question Period the plan hasn't changed.

"We're not backing away at all," Day said on Sunday. "We're moving ahead on this. It was an election promise. It's something we've been talking about for years." . . . .

John Lott said...: Well, the Liberal government admitted that hadn't solved any crimes either, but you take what you can get. Get rid of the long gun registry, show them that crime won't rise, then start educating people about the implications for handgun registration.; 3/01/2006 4:26 PM
wrangler5 said...: I've read somewhere that there are renewal deadlines approaching for citizens who initially registered some years ago, and if the law isn't repealed or replaced by their deadlines they will have to go through the effort (and fees$) of renewing, even though the government has announced that they are scrapping the registry. Any word on a government announcement of how they are going to handle this issue?; 3/01/2006 8:15 PM
