With Dems in control, "high hopes" that Federal Assault Weapons ban will be renewed

Unfortunately, I think that this is correct. It was only through heroic efforts by Tom Delay in the House of Representatives that the Assault Weapons Ban was not renewed and allowed to sunset in 2004. Bush would have signed it. The Senate would have passed it. Now there is nothing in the way of passing this. Nothing that is except logic and the fact that there is not a single academic study showing that these laws at either the federal or state level have reduced violent crime rates.

At the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, the leading gun-control advocacy group, President Paul Helmke has high hopes for the assault weapons ban — and he can list races where candidates backed by his group defeated those supported by the National Rifle Assn.

But Helmke, a former Republican mayor of Fort Wayne, Ind., acknowledged that his challenge was to convince Democrats that his cause was not "radioactive." Many Democratic strategists have come to believe that supporting gun-control laws alienates rural voters and many independents.

"Guns are a tricky issue," Helmke said. "But the elections show there's nothing to be afraid of." . . .

Thanks very much to Rich for sending this to me.

The primary reason the 2nd amendment was included in the Bill of Rights was for citizens to have the legal capability to possess the weapons needed to resist or
deter tyranny (to stop a government that no longer respects the freedoms of the people it was elected to serve.) And isn't the worst tyranny the tyranny of a
government that attempts to ban the weapons needed to stop a tyrannical government ?

When poliicians get around to banning assault weapons they will tell us they're doing it because they want to make us safer; but I'm telling you they're lieing and the real reason is they want to make it easier for a future regime to enslave us. Do any of you
actually believe we could stop an oppressive government using only small saturdaynightspecial handguns ? It is the civic duty of every citizen to remain vigilant over all of our government's agents and it's armed forces - and it is our responsibility to possess the weapons needed to deter their trampling of our
freedom.

If we allow an assault weapon ban then we plant the seeds for a future oppressive government that can and will enslave the next generation of Americans. On November 7, 2006, Illinois (and America) fell into the hands of the socialists, and Governor of Illinois Rod Blagoyavich (a socialist) was elected the same as Adolf Hitler was democratically elected. Socialism is not compatible with human nature and a free society, therefore this government must disarm it's citizens so that it can
justify and carry-out it's socialist policies without any interference from those who know better.

"...The greatest threat to the liberty and well-being of a citizenry lay with it's own government." and "The Constitution was born from the severe distrust that our American ancestors had for the federal government. They understood what people throughout history had learned the hard way - that more often than not, people had lost their freedom at the hands of their own government." [Jacob Hornberger, WWW.FFF.ORG]

I'm telling you, I'm warning you, Illinois (America) has elected a government that does not respect your freedoms and it will use the excuse of fighting crime and
making you safer to permanently take away your freedom. Who would most likely lie and deceive you ? Me or your elected government ?

All elections since 1994, except for this one, were losers for Democrats.
It's only taken them 12 years to get Congress back after the last time they passed gun control.
Nothing to be afraid of at all!
(Helmke gets paid to spout ignorant blather like that.)
