Say what?: "National ACLU accuses black Mississippi mayor of racial profiling"
Here is a black mayor who won 88 percent of the vote in the Democratic primary. Accusing him of racism seems beyond words to try explaining.
The national American Civil Liberties Union on Tuesday accused the city's black mayor of civil rights violations including racial profiling in his crusade to stem crime in Mississippi's capital city.
The accusations against Mayor Frank Melton and police are based on complaints from people who say they were pulled over on the basis of their race and searched without probable cause, the ACLU's national racial profiling coordinator, King Downing, said at a news conference. . . . .
However, Melton said in an interview Tuesday that he wasn't interested in the ACLU's complaints against him or the police, and denied he had violated anyone's civil rights.
"We have 26 people that have been killed in Jackson this year. We have 300,000 people killed across America each year. The majority of them are African-American and it's time to do something different," Melton said. "I want to know what the ACLU wants to do besides criticize."

Mayor Melton says it's time to do something different, meaning it's time to ignore civil rights (the Bill of Rights). As always wars (the war on crime, the war on drugs) are excuses for government to trample civil liberty. But it's government that's responsible for the high crime in Mississippi; the government made drugs illegal which created a blackmarket which causes all the crime, which harms more than it protects. It is government that ignores the 2nd amendment and restricts gun possession which exacerbates crime. Now because, as usual, whatever government intends, the opposite will occur (more crime), and the only solution, according to government, is to trample more civil liberties to solve the problem.
Our government is our worst enemy, worst than any mugger, rapist, murderer, drug dealer or user, vicious animal or terrorist. It will harm more Americans than any other threat. And this time the trampling of civil liberties will come from an African/American who has forgotten the recent but long fought struggle for freedom (civil liberties) for Blacks; this struggle was, once upon a time, referred to as the civil rights movement. You would think Black politicians appreciate and respect civil rights.
Sure government can be abusive, and we want to be careful that people's rights are protected. But isn't fighting crime one of the areas that we generally want government to help protect us? Obviously people are also responsible for their own protection, but the types of searches that we are talking about here can't be done by private citizens. Can they? What evidence is there that Melton is abusing people's rights? Surely what evidence is there that the mayor is behaving in a racist manner?
At New Orleans, a Black mayor and police chief ignored the 4th and 2nd Amendment and disrarmed citizens. There are other examples where Black politicians baltantly declared bans on firearms.
And searches for drugs are a waste of time (prohibition is the source of most crime) - government should end prohibition - it harms more than it protects.
The evidence (weak) is that there is an obvious trend by all politicians (Bloomberg, Daley) to ignore the Bill of Rights.
The biggest abuse of rights is the 2nd amendment. In Chicago off-duty police are allowed to carry concealed firearms while the rest of the city is not allowed to have firearms at all; no person could ever argue police are more responsible than the rest of us. Politicians lie or deceive themselves into thinking otherwise.
We want government to fight crime, but we don't want them to take away our rights to do it. You could eliminate 90 to 95 % of all crime if you allowed government to eavsdrop on every citizen in every location.
Blacks can be rascist just the same as others.
